Content and Domain Knowledge

Okay... I am going to take a shot at this. After reading many "explanations", here's my summary. :-)

Content knowledge and domain knowledge are both critical to teaching and learning.  The teacher must have content knowledge to know HOW to teach while having domain knowledge to know WHAT to teach.  In terms of learning, domain knowledge includes specific subject matter but is also more broad in that it encompasses general knowledge gained from our experiences.  This knowledge helps us to understand and process the specific content knowledge.

  1. Exactly. Domain knowledge is broad and general. In one sense it is a core of understandings shared by educated individuals.
